Blue Nightshade And Silent Princesses

NOTE: This story can also be found here on AO3!

It hadn’t really hit Link that Zelda was gone until he saw that flower.

It was all because of that dumb statue. He should’ve just fixed the researcher’s damn vehicles. But instead he had traveled to the Great Plateau, where it had begun years ago. Then he had talked to the damn bargainer statue, who needed its fucking eyes.

And that was why he was standing here, staring at a single blue nightshade, glowing in the moonlight.

Zelda had said that blue nightshade and silent princesses were like sisters. They were similar, but still far too different to be anything but family. And he had listened to her. She was the smartest person he knew, smarter than Purah and Robbie and Josha, and everyone, really.

Which was why it hurt so much right now.

Link sat down and stared at the flower, glowing a shimmery blue in the night. Silent princesses glowed the same way. That’s how their conversation had started.

“Hey, Zel?” Link had asked, when they were wandering near Cotera’s fountain. “Are blue nightshade and silent princesses, like, related?”

“Interesting question!” Zelda chirped, lunging forward to catch a lizard. “They do share some genes, but they aren’t quite the same. Their blue color and their tendency to glow is what they have in common.”

“I think my favorite flower’s blue nightshade,” Link said quietly as Zelda walked over towards him.

“What was that?” Zelda asked.

Link looked down at his fiancé. “Nothing,” he said, before he leaned down and kissed her.

Link remembered how once, she had said that she loved him more than silent princesses. “I love you more than blue nightshade, Zelda,” Link said, his voice cracking. He gently picked the flower and set it in the Purah Pad, before he stood up and leaned against a rock.

“When I find you, Zelda, I’ll give you a bouquet. A bouquet of blue nightshade and silent princesses.”

Somewhere, somehow, he knew that his Zelda had smiled at that.

Story Notes

Oh my god TOTK makes my Zelink brain cry so much.

I wasn’t sure whether to do fiancé or fiancée, so apologies if I got it wrong.

The idea for this spouted from when I was doing the side adventure “A Call From The Depths”. I saw a blue nightshade glowing at night and thought that, naturally, I must make Link cry because his wife is far far gone.

The things we fanfiction writers will do.
